Bomb-squad personnel safely took custody of an apparent military artillery shell found by a passerby Tuesday in a residential neighborhood near Del Mar Mesa Preserve, authorities reported.
A 911 caller informed the San Diego Police Department about the discovery in the 7200 block of Arroyo Grande Road in Torrey Highlands shortly before 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, SDPD Sgt. Saum Poorsaleh said.
After consulting with police and reviewing photos that officers took of the object, ordnance-handling technicians from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, the FBI and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar went to the neighborhood west of Interstate 15 and south of state Route 56 to investigate, SDFRD Capt.
