‘Our financial situation is bad’: Montgomery County Public Schools possible staff cuts following budget shortfall

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) announced that some jobs might be eliminated following a budget shortfall.

In a video posted on YouTube on Tuesday, MCPS’s Superintendent Thomas W. Taylor shared that the county is facing a deficit of $150 million, forcing the school division to reduce critical positions.

On Tuesday, some school staff members received emails stating that their position or job classification might be listed and considered for a potential reduction.

“Right now, the county council is considering a reduction to the school’s system budget request in 10% increments or tranches of our increase that’s been planned. Basically, the council will decide how much to cut the school system’s budget request by those 10% buckets,” said Taylor in the video…
