FIRST ALERT: Small Shower Chance Today, Heating Up for the Weekend

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – A fast-moving cold front clips the Western Carolinas late this afternoon with spotty showers and an isolated thunderstorm possible, but any rain activity clears out overnight. High pressure takes over, cranking up the heat through the weekend before rain chances creep back in the middle of next week.

Today: Small Afternoon and Evening Rain Chance

Isolated showers develop this afternoon as the cold front approaches from the northwest, with an isolated thunderstorm possible over the mountains and foothills. The rain holds off until late afternoon, moving into the mountains after 4 PM and the Upstate after 7 PM. The activity moves through quickly with little rainfall expected—most locations see nothing at all, while areas that do see showers pick up a trace of rain.

Despite a cold morning, temperatures jump about 30 to 35 degrees to afternoon highs in the Upstate in the upper 70s to low 80s and the mid-to-upper 70s.

Tonight through Friday Morning: Cooler & Clear

The front clears tonight, leaving behind crisp air and gusty northwest winds up to 30 mph, especially in the mountain valleys. Overnight temperatures dip into the upper 40s to low 50s across the Upstate, and drop into the mid-40s in the mountains.

Thursday brings bright sunshine with gusty winds sticking around during the day. Gusts are in the 20 to 30 mph range with the mountain seeing the most highest winds. Highs Thursday range from the mid-60s in the mountains to the mid 70s in the Upstate.

Friday morning is a cold one as temperatures drop into the mid 40s in the Upstate and the upper 30s to low 40s in the mountains.

There could be some patchy frost in the higher elevations of the mountains. But with full sunshine thanks to high pressure dominating, temperatures climb to the mid to upper 70s.

Weekend: Feeling Like Summer

Saturday features mostly sunny skies with temperatures climbing into the mid-to-upper 80s all across the Western Carolinas. Overnight lows climb in the low 60s in the Upstate and the mid 50s through the mountains.

Sunday follows suit with mostly sunny skies and even more heat. The Upstate pushes toward the upper 80s to low 90s, while the mountains reach the mid to upper 80s. We’re nearing record highs for the day. In Greenville the record is 92° and in Asheville the record is 88° so we’re falling just 2° to 3° shy of the records.

There is a small chance for pop up showers and storms this weekend as not only the heat rises but the humidity creeps up as well.

I wouldn’t be worried about your outdoor plans, but don’t be surprised if an isolated shower or storm pops during the afternoon.

Early Next Week: Moisture Returns

The ridge flattens Monday and Tuesday as a deep trough develops over the Great Basin. This setup eventually supports moisture return from the south, though the timing and strength of any rain chances remain uncertain at this time. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms cannot be ruled out starting Tuesday and continuing into the middle of next week, but confidence on timing and coverage remains low.
