Worcester Mayor Joe Petty on a proposed new Burncoat High School: “Make sure students have a safe and good learning environment.”

A part of the City of Worcester’s proposed Fiscal Year 2027 budget is money towards the rebuilding of Burncoat High School. Burncoat is the only high school in the city to not have been rebuilt or renovated recently. Speaking with Spectrum News, Worcester Mayor Joe Petty said a new Burncoat High School is an important project. “Every high school would have been touched in this century, which is important. I think the ALL School, when it was called back then, was done in 98 and we did Voke (Worcester Tech), we did North, we did Doherty and South High School. And this is important. It’s keeping people here in the city, people in that neighborhood, the Burncoat neighborhood, making sure those kids have a good educational experience.”

Petty added that before the rebuilding of the city’s high schools the city was losing students to school choice. The new facilities have reversed that trend. “It’s so important because we’re losing students to the towns. You know, the towns have built new high schools and people are leaving. And now we build Doherty, it’s at capacity. South High is probably over capacity. And so in Burncoat, we’ve got to make sure we build enough for, again, make sure students have a safe and good learning environment.”…
