Birmingham art camp uses creativity, culture and conversation to empower Black youth

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Inside Studio 2500, the conversations begin with art.

Students are asked not only what they created, but why they created it. What emotions are behind the colors? What stories live inside the sketches? What experiences shaped the piece?

For 12-year-old Zoie Barnes, those conversations helped transform the way she saw both art and herself.

“When I first started, I just drew stuff,” Barnes said. “But then that’s when I started to think a little bit more, think a little deeper of what I wanted to draw. And then I drew it, and then I understand it why I wanted to draw it.”…
