Laken Snelling returns to court after plea of not guilty in infant’s death

(NewsNation) — The former University of Kentucky cheerleader charged in the 2025 death of her newborn will return to court after pleading not guilty last month to manslaughter charges.

Laken Snelling was arrested in August of last year after investigators found the remains of a baby boy wrapped in a towel and inside a trash bag in the closet of her off-campus apartment. She returns to court Thursday for a preliminary hearing.

Snelling, who was 21 at the time, told police she passed out on the baby after giving birth.

Originally, Snelling was charged with abuse of a corpse, and the manslaughter charge was added later after the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office determined the baby was born alive and that the cause of death was “asphyxia by undetermined means.”…
