DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – A young woman in Kettering was nearly the victim of a $9k fake warrant arrest scam on Wednesday evening.
The woman told 2 NEWS she received a phone call in which a scammer had lied, telling her the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office had a warrant for her arrest. She was sent “information”, including a false warrant, a list of mobile escort orders to follow and fake papers with instructions on using a bitcoin deposit kiosk.
The orders are designed to look official (with a person’s legal name included), and the scammers are convincing. They ordered her to stay on the phone call under the false threat of arrest and criminal charges. In fear, she drove to her bank and attempted to withdraw $9k for the scammers.
