New memoir reflects on service, resilience, and the life lessons learned aboard three Navy destroyers

WILMINGTON, Del. — For Bear resident John Riddle, the journey from the deck of a Navy destroyer to the quiet focus of a writing desk has been decades in the making. Now, the longtime Delaware author is sharing that journey in his newest release, Charting My Course: Four Years, Three Destroyers, and a Lifetime of Lessons, his 41st published book.

Riddle served in the United States Navy from 1970 to 1974, a period when young sailors often found themselves navigating not only open waters, but also the realities of responsibility, teamwork, and personal growth. His memoir focuses less on combat and military accolades and more on the experiences and lessons that shaped him during those formative years.

“This book isn’t about medals or missions,” Riddle said. “It’s about what the Navy teaches you when you’re young, unsure, and suddenly responsible for much more than yourself.”
