New Orleans shelter for women expands into affordable housing: ‘We are building hope’

When Hotel Hope opened its emergency shelter for women and children in Central City in 2018, it took the nonprofit around 35 days on average to secure permanent housing for its families.

With rising rents and New Orleans facing a shortage of affordable units, that’s since doubled to around 75 days.

In response, Hotel Hope decided to build its own affordable housing. On Wednesday, the nonprofit held a ceremonial groundbreaking along with its developer, People’s Housing+, on its first two duplexes as part of its new Hope Family Housing initiative…
