WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The City of Great Bend revved up its engines Thursday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its newly improved Sunflower Rod and Custom Association Dragstrip.
The city replaced over 2,300 feet of pavement since canceling the 2023 race schedule due to concerns about the track’s surface.
City Administrator Logan Burns said the drag strip’s closure was a significant loss for a community that’s so proud of its racing history.
“We’re known for drag racing in Great Bend,” Burns said. “We hosted the 1955 NHRA Nationals here. We were the first place to host that. But just being down for several years, I think people are just ready to have racing back in the community.”…
