Naval Station Mayport honors 37 sailors killed in USS Stark attack

MAYPORT, Fla. – Naval Station Mayport paused Friday to remember 37 sailors killed nearly 40 years ago aboard the USS Stark, which was struck by two Iraqi missiles in the Persian Gulf in 1987.

Base command leaders, Mayport sailors and service members, and survivors of the USS Stark attended the annual memorial. Some of the survivors were present at the ceremony.

The annual tribute has kept the legacy of the USS Stark sailors alive for decades. Each year, a bell is rung 37 times, once for each of the fallen sailors…
