Great white shark tracked near coast of Pensacola Beach

PENSACOLA, Fla. (WKRG) — It’s that time of year when great white sharks are migrating out of the Gulf of Mexico, but some are lingering in local waters off the coast of Pensacola Beach, providing researchers with data to better understand their behavior and movements.

A 9-foot, 9-inch great white shark named Percy swam his way to Northwest Florida. Monday afternoon, a satellite tag on the Great White shark transmitted a signal to researchers, showing that Percy was swimming near the Pensacola Beach coastline.

Dr. Sean Powers is the director of the Stokes School of Marine and Environmental Sciences at the University of South Alabama. He studies these predators and their behaviors.

“Sharks invoke fear and they invoke fascination,” Powers said. “A healthy ocean ecosystem has apex predators, and there is no more apex predator than a white shark.”…
