New rules for San Diego County residents receiving CalFresh benefits begin June 1

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Starting on June 1, some San Diego County residents who receive food benefits through CalFresh will need to meet certain work or volunteer requirements under new federal rules.

The federal rules apply to people who are considered Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWD) and will be applying for or renewing their CalFresh benefits.

They must be between the ages of 18 and 64, are not living with a child under 14, do not meet a federal exemption, are physically and mentally able to work, and are not pregnant or have another form of disability.

Beginning on June 1, individuals who are considered ABAWD must complete at least 20 hours per week, or 80 hours per month, of work or volunteer service to receive CalFresh benefits…
