Shadyside’s high-profile vacant corner is about to smell like fresh espresso again. Commonplace Coffee is set to move into the Walnut Street storefront that has been empty since Georgie’s Corner Cafe shut its doors in January, bringing its coffee, baked goods, and grab-and-go meals to the corridor later this summer.
According to Pittsburgh Business Times, Commonplace will take over the former Georgie’s Corner space and serve a lineup of coffee, baked items, and prepared grab-and-go options. The outlet reports that the team is aiming for a summer opening as renovations move forward.
Georgie’s closed in January
Georgie’s Corner Cafe closed on Jan. 18 after nearly four years in the neighborhood. The owners announced the decision on social media and thanked residents for their support, saying, “We are honored to have been a part of the Shadyside community,” according to KDKA. Co-owner George Saxon later told The Tartan that rising costs and staffing pressures played a role in the decision to close.
What Commonplace will bring
Commonplace is a Pittsburgh-based roaster and cafe operator that already has a footprint across several city neighborhoods. The company runs multiple cafes, a bakery and a headquarters roastery. According to Commonplace Coffee, its current Pittsburgh locations include Garfield, Squirrel Hill, and Southside Works, and the brand emphasizes community-focused service alongside its wholesale roasting operation.
