An article in the local paper in May 1926 mentioned that the 160+ lots that had made up the Fellowship Colony on the Mesa were almost all sold. “The lands are situated in a protected place on the southerly slopes of the Mesa hills, commanding a splendid outlook on the channel.” – Santa Barbara Daily News, May 8, 1926
The “Fellowship Colony” was a utopian community that started on the Mesa in 1919. A magazine called NOW wrote that the Mesa colony was to be “cooperative, with common gardens and orchards in which all are to share.”
But the share and share alike philosophy fell apart in 1924 when oil was discovered on one of the properties. And now in 1926, most of the properties had been sold. But there is still a street named Fellowship Road…
