South Shore Mom Allegedly Puts Gun to 9-Year-Old’s Head Outside O’Keeffe, Judge Locks Her Up

What started as an after-school pickup on Chicago’s South Shore has turned into a serious felony case. Prosecutors say a mother pulled a handgun on a group of kids outside O’Keeffe School of Excellence on Wednesday, May 6, after deciding that one of the students had hit her son. One of the children dialed 911 and a school security guard flagged down a nearby Chicago police officer, who stopped the woman’s vehicle and later recovered a firearm from her purse, according to authorities. The woman, identified in charging documents as 39-year-old Kenosha Willis, is now in the Cook County Jail facing multiple felony counts.

What prosecutors allege

According to prosecutors, Willis confronted a group of kids outside the South Shore campus as students were heading home, then pulled a black handgun from her purse and aimed it at two of them. They allege she went so far as to point the weapon at a 9-year-old boy’s head, a scene that sent several children running, as reported by CWB Chicago.

A school security guard then stepped in and signaled a Chicago police officer, who pulled Willis over and found a handgun in her purse, The Blaze reported, citing prosecutors. Charging documents quoted her as allegedly saying, “They don’t know who they messing with. I’ll shoot this b**** up,” as she left the scene.

Charges and court status

Prosecutors have brought a stack of charges: one count of making a threat to a person at a school, four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated unlawful possession of a firearm and a violation of the Illinois Concealed Carry Act, according to CWB Chicago. Cook County Circuit Court records show the case went before Judge Luciano Panici Jr., who ordered Willis held in custody pending further proceedings. Local court reporting notes she is being held without bond.

Legal implications

Illinois law treats firearms on public streets and threats near schools as serious felonies, with potential prison time if there is a conviction. The state’s Criminal Code outlines aggravated unlawful-use and related weapons offenses that typically guide prosecutors when a gun and alleged threats are involved in public or school-adjacent settings, according to the Illinois General Assembly.

School and neighborhood

O’Keeffe School of Excellence is listed as a PreK–8 neighborhood school in Chicago’s South Shore community, and district materials place the campus in the area where the confrontation was reported. The school’s public profile includes its address and contact information on the district website, and officials are well aware that community safety concerns tend to spike whenever an incident involving a firearm happens on or near school grounds.
