Mother’s Warning After Toddler Crushed by Falling Dresser

A Texas mother is urging parents to take extra precautions after the tragic loss of her two-year-old daughter, Helena Cochran, who died when a heavy chest of drawers fell on her. The antique dresser, weighing around 80 pounds, toppled while Helena was reaching for a toy placed on top of it.

Taryn Cochran, 21, from Dentons, Texas, shared her heartbreaking experience in the hope of preventing similar accidents. She explained that the dresser had been in the family home for years without issue until that fateful day in January.

“It happened so quickly and silently, and our lives changed forever,” Taryn said. She described the incident as “any parent’s worst nightmare,” expressing deep guilt over not having secured the furniture to the wall.

Helena, who would have celebrated her third birthday this month, lost her life after climbing the dresser to reach a toy. Taryn’s message is clear: anchor heavy furniture to prevent it from tipping over. She emphasized the importance of this safety measure, noting that many parents, like herself, may not realize the danger posed by seemingly sturdy, heavy pieces of furniture.

The mother’s mission now is to raise awareness about furniture tip-over hazards, which are more common than many realize. “Thousands of children are injured each year when dressers, shelves, or TVs fall,” Taryn said. Most incidents involve young children under six who climb or pull on furniture, causing it to fall.

Taryn encourages parents to secure dressers and other heavy furniture, remove enticing items from high surfaces, and check the stability of older pieces. “Anchoring furniture takes only a little time but can save lives,” she said. Sharing her story with a heavy heart, Taryn hopes that Helena’s memory will help protect other families from similar tragedies.
