Fox News Host Struggles as Secretary of Wars Speech is Lost in Static

At an awards ceremony on May 18 at Fort Campbell, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth encountered significant audio difficulties during a live-streamed event, causing frustration for both the audience and broadcasters. Fox News’ LiveNOW channel was covering the ceremony in which Hegseth was set to present Purple Hearts to nine U.S.

Army veterans. However, technical problems with the microphone and overwhelming wind noise rendered much of his speech inaudible.

Despite the disruptions, Hegseth persevered, attempting to deliver his remarks amid loud static and the fluttering of flags behind him. At one point, he managed to say, “When I arrived at a unit,” before the sound cut out again.

The Fox News host Josh Breslow struggled to find a workable audio feed, cycling through multiple sources with no success. Attempts to restore clear sound were hindered by the persistent wind interference, and eventually, the live broadcast was forced to continue without usable audio.

This incident follows other recent public challenges for Hegseth. Earlier in May, during a Senate budget committee hearing, his official title was mistakenly omitted from his name placard, listing him simply as “Defense Secretary” rather than “Secretary of War.” While the hearing remained mostly respectful, Senator Lindsey Graham expressed strong criticism toward Hegseth, highlighting ongoing tensions related to the Iran conflict.

The series of difficulties has drawn attention to Hegseth’s public appearances, underscoring the challenges faced by officials navigating high-profile roles amid scrutiny and technical hurdles.
