State health officials step in amid ongoing Wintergreen wastewater issues in Nelson County

NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WSET) — State health officials have joined the response to ongoing wastewater overflow issues at the Wintergreen Wastewater Treatment Plant in Nelson County, as nearby residents say they are still waiting for clear answers and a solution.

People who live near the South Fork Rockfish River said they are frustrated by what they describe as repeated sewage overflows and a lack of progress. Steve Bayne, a Nelson County resident, said it is “really impossible to understand how this can take so long and also why there is not a greater sense of urgency.” He also asked, “How can there not be a solution at this point in time?”

Paul Davis, who lives near the river, said residents want specifics about what is being done. “It’s just words. ‘We’re working on it. We’re looking into it. We’re testing.’ I want details. What are you doing?” Davis said. He added in response to how neighbors are feeling about issues like this, “I’ve spoken to everyone on this side of the river. They feel helpless.”…
