HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — The safety of Huntsville students is what has driven Mary Lue Ryan for nearly four decades.
After 39 years, she said, making sure students make it to class safely is still the best part of her day.

“It’s a good way to start my day,” Ryan said. “I had a lady the other day stop and say to me, ‘You’ve been here a while,’ and I said, ‘Yes, I have.’ And she said, ‘Well, you keep up the good work.’ So, something like that, it just lifts your spirits.”
Ryan became a safety patrol aid, commonly known as a crossing guard, when she moved back to the United States following her husband’s service overseas in Germany. Once she started, she said she could never imagine walking away…
