A surprising discovery awaited a shopper in Australia who found a live frog tucked inside a bag of lettuce purchased from a local grocery store.
Laura Jones and Billie Le Pine, originally from New Zealand and living in Esperance, recounted how their roommate returned from Woolworths with the unusual find. “He’s the most casual Australian ever,” Jones told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
“He was like, ‘Bro, I’ve got a lettuce, like a frog in my lettuce.’ It was definitely unexpected for us Kiwis.”
Jones shared a video of the frog, which quickly went viral on TikTok, garnering millions of views. Le Pine described the amphibian as about the size of a palm.
“It’s quite a decent-sized frog for a big adventure,” he said. “Our veggies mostly come from eastern Australia to Esperance, and the lettuce bag has holes for freshness-so the frog probably had a snack and some air during the trip.”
The residents named their unexpected visitor Greg and released him, along with the lettuce, into a nearby dam to return him safely to his natural environment. “That was the most random thing I’ve ever encountered while opening a bag of lettuce,” Le Pine remarked. “I’m just glad Greg is back where he belongs.”
Woolworths has issued a statement confirming the incident is under investigation, noting it appears to be an isolated case with no other reports.
