New residency requirement to vote called out at Minnehaha Commission meeting

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – A state law passed last year is once again on voters’ minds ahead of the primary elections because voters who don’t have permanent residency in the state will have limited ballots.

Some individuals have described the new residency laws as disenfranchising and burdensome. But supporters of the bill that passed in 2025 are standing their ground, saying it’s important for the state to set some ground rules.

South Dakotans who use an address of a mail-forwarding service or post office box are subject to federal-only ballots. To get a ballot with state and local races, a voter must show proof of residing in the state for 30 consecutive days…
