Nonprofits cooperate to save food on broken truck

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — This is a story involving hundreds of pastries, pastry sandwiches, and a broken refrigerator truck.

Late Friday afternoon, the kitchen coordinator at the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House and a truck driver from Team Buche Cares teamed up. The refrigeration unit in Ed Moor’s truck was malfunctioning. He had just come from a food distribution in Flandreau for Team Buche Cares and needed to offload the food before it spoiled.

“The front desk came and got me out of the kitchen and said there is a gentleman here who had a truckload of pastries, and I was like, oh yeah, I better go up front,” said Barbie Jones. “So I went up there and he said he had a couple pallets and I knew I couldn’t take it all, so I started making phone calls on who could take what and how much they could take.”

Bishop Dudley ended up sharing the food with the Union Gospel Mission, The Children’s Home Shelter for Family Safety, Volunteers of America, Berakhah House and Minnehaha County Safe Home. The pallets contained an estimated 10,000 servings…
