Teen Brawls and Stabbings Spark Chaos at Rhode Island Beaches

Additional Coverage:

Three individuals sustained minor stab wounds during chaotic incidents at popular New England beaches on Tuesday, as large crowds of teenagers gathered amid record-breaking heat.

At around 3 p.m., Narragansett Town Beach in Rhode Island-a favored spot for family summer outings-became the scene of a stabbing incident. Police arrived to find three victims with minor injuries.

Narragansett Police Chief Kyle Rekas confirmed in a statement that first responders treated the victims before transporting them to local hospitals. Authorities have yet to identify any suspects or determine a motive, and it remains unclear whether the stabbing was targeted or random.

The sudden violence triggered panic among the hundreds of beachgoers, resulting in disorder as many tried to leave simultaneously. Chief Rekas noted that several smaller disturbances occurred amid the rush to exit the beach. Two adults were taken into custody on charges including simple assault, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and obstruction of justice; however, these arrests are not believed to be connected to the stabbing incident.

Meanwhile, roughly 20 miles away in Middletown, Rhode Island, approximately 1,200 teenagers overwhelmed Second Beach on Sachuest Bay. Tensions escalated when one individual began harassing a large group, prompting police to use pepper spray to disperse the crowd. A bystander described witnessing a large fight during the efforts to clear the beach, noting the presence of significant bloodshed.

Several teens, aged 17 to 19, were arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and obstructing an officer. Additionally, Ronan Pinkham, 18, from Massachusetts, faces felony assault and DUI charges after allegedly striking a Newport police officer with his vehicle in the parking lot while attempting to flee. Pinkham reportedly admitted to driving under the influence.

These incidents underscore ongoing challenges in managing large gatherings amid rising temperatures and highlight the need for increased public safety measures at popular summer destinations.
