Mindy Kaling Shares How Motherhood Changed Her Approach to Health and Fitness
Mindy Kaling has opened up about how becoming a parent shifted her perspective on health and fitness. In a recent interview, the actress and writer revealed that her motivation to stay fit is no longer rooted in vanity but in a desire to be there for her children for many years to come.
Speaking with Bustle, Kaling reflected on the challenges of undergoing a public weight-loss journey, acknowledging the strong reactions it can provoke among fans. “It’s sometimes no fun when one of your favorite actors loses weight.
You have an idea of what they were like when you grew attached to them, and it made them endear themselves to you,” she said. Despite the scrutiny, she understands the cultural fascination with such changes, given her own interest in pop culture.
Kaling, who is a mother to two daughters and a son, shared that her priorities have evolved significantly. “When I was younger, I would want to lose weight because of vanity reasons.
Now I want to lose weight or have lost weight because I want to stave off things like diabetes,” she explained, noting her family history with the condition. Her primary goal is longevity and health, aiming to “live at least 20 more years” for her children.
The actress also discussed how she has cultivated a healthier relationship with exercise. She no longer believes workouts have to be grueling to be effective. “I’ve really been mixing it up and knowing that if a workout doesn’t necessarily make me soak my clothes with sweat, that it still was a good workout… It does not have to be punishing,” Kaling said in a 2022 interview.
In 2024, she shared with Prevention that her routine includes strength training and walking 15 to 20 miles each week. She often combines phone calls with walks, making it an easy way to stay active daily.
“If I have any phone call, I just pick up the phone and I just go for a walk. Sometimes I listen to music, but it’s been such an easy way to get three to five miles a day of walking and movement, which I think is really important,” she noted.
Through motherhood and a renewed focus on health, Mindy Kaling continues to prioritize well-being not just for herself, but as a lasting commitment to her family.
