Belvidere North student wins inaugural theater award

BELVIDERE, Ill. (WIFR) – A Belvidere North High School student won an inaugural award honoring behind-the-scenes work in musical theater.

Navion “Navi” Curry was honored with the “Backstage Champion” award at the Illinois High School Musical Theatre Awards in Chicago. Curry was selected from a record-breaking 95 participating schools throughout the state.

Teachers say actors often receive recognition, but it’s also important to recognize the work behind the curtain that makes productions possible.

“Belvidere North and Belvidere High School put a show together where Navi was the stage manager for two separate theater programs,” said Mychall Miller-Cornejo, choreographer and director. “We thought he was a good option to be able to submit for a nomination. And then when he got the nomination, we came to support him, hoping he would get it. But then when they said his name, we were just incredibly excited.”…
