Albany Mayor Applyrs signs bill to curb violence

Albany, NY (WRGB) — Albany’s push to confront violence with a coordinated, community-driven strategy took a major step forward Wednesday, May 20, 2026, as Mayor Applyrs signed legislation permanently establishing the city’s Office of Violence Prevention.

The signing, held in Albany with city staff, local elected officials, nonprofit leaders and community organizations, formally created a dedicated office within the mayor’s administration focused solely on coordinating Albany’s violence prevention approach. The move follows unanimous approval by the Albany Common Council last month.
