Chinese national indicted in scheme to send imported drugs through CSRA

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – A Chinese national was indicted in a scheme to import hundreds of kilograms of drugs, sending some through the CSRA.

Federal prosecutors said chemical company owner Wei “David” Gong, 45, imported hundreds of kilograms of synthetic cathinones into the Savannah and Augusta areas. Synthetic cathinones are designer drugs that mimic the effects of ecstasy, cocaine or amphetamines.

Deputies said an investigation began in January after two victims came forward alleging criminal sexual conduct against them between 1998 and 2003.

Prosecutors said Gong sold at least 10 kilograms to an undercover agent working for the Drug Enforcement Administration and to Conway Rhinehart, 45, of Hephzibah. Rhinehart was sentenced in January 2024 to 108 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to drug distribution charges…
