Dolphin fatally struck by boat propeller in South Carolina

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network said on Sunday that its team received a report of a deceased juvenile bottlenose dolphin near Shem Creek; the organization is now investigating the cause of death.

On May 17, staff from the Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources carefully moved through shallow water to recover the animal.

The dolphin was taken to the shared lab at Fort Johnson, used by the LMMN and NOAA, and a post-mortem examination was performed soon after as part of the LMMN’s ongoing work with stranded marine mammals.

Based on preliminary findings, LMMN suspects a boat propeller fatally struck the young dolphin before its death. Additional analyses and sample testing are still pending, the organization says…
