NC House approves constitutional amendment to limit property tax revenue increase

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — On Thursday, the North Carolina House of Representatives approved a proposed constitutional amendment that could limit how much local governments can increase property taxes in the future.

The vote comes as an NC Senate bill moving to the NC House proposes a moratorium to delay property tax reappraisals in several NC counties for one year.

Guilford County leaders have already expressed concerns that the NC Senate bill could impact the county’s budget process.

Concerns

One Republican representative told FOX8 that the proposals are aimed at reducing higher property tax burdens on people and keeping local governments from having their budgets rely heavily on growing property tax revenue.

A Democrat representative said the changes could make it harder for counties to fund services and respond to future needs.
