California discovers first West Nile virus sample of the year in popular neighborhood

California health officials on Wednesday discovered the first sign of the West Nile virus in the state’s capital region this year, detecting the disease in a mosquito sample taken from an area south of Tahoe Park.

The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District said the detection was just the third case in Northern California in 2026. It aligned with the beginning of the mosquito season in Sacramento County, which typically runs from May to October.

“This finding is an important reminder that mosquito season is already underway, and much earlier than we typically see,” Gary Goodman, Yolo County manager, said in a statement. “It’s important for residents to take these findings seriously and do everything they can to protect themselves.”…
