NWS reports North Iowa tornadoes brought 110 mph winds Sunday evening

The National Weather Service office in Des Moines has released storm survey results following Sunday’s severe weather outbreak across the northern tier of Iowa.

Of the 13 tornadoes confirmed and tracked in Iowa the evening of May 17th, four touchdowns occurred within the KIMT viewing area. Of those four, all of them have been assigned a rating of EF-1.

The first tornado to spin up started at approximately 9:44 PM Monday evening, traveled 10.2 miles to the northeast before ending east of Woden, Iowa.

As the line of storms moved eastward another tornado dropped down at the edge of Clear Lake just east of Ventura, Iowa. This tornado was short-lived but brought estimated max winds of over 100 MPH.

Further north, touching down just south of Joice, Iowa, a slightly stronger tornado spun up winds around 110 MPH. This tornado traveled just under 10 miles and crossed I-35 before dissipating near 440th Street.

The last tornado tracked by the NWS in Des Moines clocked estimated wind speeds of 105 MPH, spinning just north of Mason City, Iowa and through the southern part of Plymouth, Iowa. It traveled seven miles and damaged trees and outbuildings…
