Man convicted in drug-related killing gets life in prison

A Claymont man is going to prison for the rest of his life for a shooting death in 2024.

According to the Delaware Department of Justice, 29-year-old Michael Toombs shot and killed 35-year-old Devontre Taylor in August 2024 at a Claymont apartment complex. Prosecutors said Taylor agreed to meet Toombs for a drug transaction.

New Castle County police arrested Toombs at his residence later that day. Prosecutors said a search revealed the alleged murder weapon, hundreds of bags of fentanyl, and a phone belonging to Taylor.

“The defendant repeatedly made the conscious, deliberate decision to inflict misery and death on other people across our state – no longer,” Attorney General Kathy Jennings said. “The diligent work of the New Castle County Police Department and our Department of Justice trial team have ensured once again that the state of Delaware is a safer and more just place.”…
