Taco Bell Unveils Cantina Chicken Mexican Pizza, a Bold New Twist on a Beloved Classic

Taco Bell has introduced the Cantina Chicken Mexican Pizza nationwide, marking the first time in the 41-year history of the iconic Mexican Pizza that a new flavor has been launched across the country. Known for its devoted fan base, the Mexican Pizza holds a special place in Taco Bell’s menu-and now, the chain is shaking things up with a fresh, chicken-centered take.

The Mexican Pizza has long been a fan favorite, with a passionate following that rallied when the item was temporarily removed from menus in 2020. Petitions, celebrity endorsements, and even a rap from Doja Cat helped bring it back permanently in 2022. Now, Taco Bell is expanding on that success with the introduction of Cantina Chicken, combining the classic pizza’s crispy tortilla shells with slow-roasted chicken seasoned with garlic, onions, and chiles.

Liz Matthews, Taco Bell’s global chief food innovation officer, emphasized the care taken not to stray too far from the original. “The Mexican Pizza is iconic for a reason,” she said. “We didn’t want to reinvent it; we wanted to build on it.”

This new version features black beans, green chile sauce, a blend of three cheeses, shredded purple cabbage, and pico de gallo atop the crunchy shells. Complementing these ingredients are two signature salsas: the new Jalapeño Citrus Salsa, with red jalapeños and guajillo chiles, and the Avocado Verde Salsa, rich with green chili peppers, tomatillos, and real avocado pulp.

Early tastings reveal that the Cantina Chicken Mexican Pizza offers a satisfying crunch and a fresh, vibrant flavor profile. The combination of tender chicken and crisp veggies adds a new dimension compared to the original, while the salsas provide a balanced, lingering heat. Though the Jalapeño Citrus Salsa’s kick is subtle, it pairs well with the overall flavor.

Fans of the original Mexican Pizza may appreciate the nostalgic elements, but this new variety stands out with its lighter, fresher taste and nacho-like texture. It’s suitable for any occasion-whether a quick lunch, a road trip snack, or a late-night indulgence.

Taco Bell isn’t stopping here. Alongside the Cantina Chicken Mexican Pizza, the brand plans to release Mexican Pizza Empanadas and Strawberry and Cream Mexican Pizza Bites later this year, continuing its tradition of playful and unexpected menu innovations.

As the company celebrates the return and evolution of the Mexican Pizza, fans can look forward to these new flavors that honor the original while offering exciting new tastes. And perhaps, soon, a Cantina Chicken Mexican Pizza will be making its way to celebrity fans like Dolly Parton, who famously advocated for the pizza’s comeback.
