KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — While road work is paused this weekend, several events and long-term projects could slow you down while driving around East Tennessee. 6 News anchor Bo Williams is breaking down what you need to know.
The Savannah Bananas are playing at Neyland Stadium on Saturday. Several roads are scheduled to be closed to general traffic starting at 5 a.m., including Volunteer at Peyton Manning Pass, Phillip Fulmer Way from Cumberland Avenue to Lake Loudoun Boulevard, Cumberland at Estabrook Road, the Neyland Stadium SE Loading Dock vicinity, and the Hill will be limited to rideshare pickup and drop-off.

After the game, Tennessee Athletics will test a new traffic pattern aimed at reducing gridlock at Neyland Stadium. Beginning near the KUB Kuwahee Wastewater Treatment Plant, three westbound lanes will guide traffic toward Alcoa Highway, I-40, and Kingston Pike rather than the roadway’s normal traffic pattern, which features two lanes for each direction.
AAA predicts that Tennessee will see a record amount of travel this Memorial Day weekend, and to help ease traffic, the Tennessee Department of Transportation plans to pause lane closures on state routes. However, some closure for long-term projects will still be in place. TDOT also released its list of projects that will impact traffic in East Tennessee between Friday, May 22, and Wednesday, May 27.

Gas prices are up around eight cents week over week and $1.43 year over year in Tennessee, according to AAA. GasBuddy’s head of petroleum analysis, Patrick De Haan, said as stations sell through their fuel, oil prices could lower during Memorial Day weekend, however without a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, gas prices will likely continue to rise.
