MINNEAPOLIS — A pause on building some data centers in Minneapolis is now in effect after the city council voted Thursday, 8-5, in favor of a six-month moratorium.
The move is meant to give officials time to research potential impacts and update ordinances. But as more cities make similar moves, there’s some concern that’s creating a fragmented set of rules across the state.
“The state is better equipped to regulate them and help study them than cities are; therefore, it’s incumbent on our legislature to take action in the next session,” said Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy CEO Kathryn Hoffman. “As long as there’s this gap in state regulation, we’re going to continue to see this city by city approach.”…
