SOS seeks to clarify federal-only absentee ballots

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Absentee ballot applications have prompted the South Dakota Secretary of State to send a news release about state law 12-4-1.3. The release specifically mentions “the auditor in Minnehaha County.”

Voters must submit an application to the county auditor to request an absentee ballot. The news release addresses voters who have a postal mailbox address who request an absentee ballot.

“Pursuant to HB 1208 (2025 session), 12-4-1.3 was amended by the Legislature to add a stipulation that if a voter puts a postal mailbox address as their residence address on an absentee ballot application that voter would be changed to a Federal-Only voter which allows them to only vote a federal ballot,” the news release said…
