Bad Parking example resurrects debate over golf carts and handicapped placards

A member of the Parking Patrol spotted this golf cart parked in the handicapped accommodation zone at Publix at Colony Plaza in The Villages.

The golf cart had a handicapped placard, resurrecting the debate as to whether that is kosher.

Villager Don Simson recently tried to sort out the facts in a Letter to the Editor, clarifying that under Florida law the handicapped placard is issued to a person, not a vehicle. Resident Al Baughn concurred with that conclusion.

However, Edward Viellette of the Village of Sliver Lake had another interpretation of the statute and concluded that disabled parking permits are not applicable to golf carts…
