WATCH: 6.0 magnitude earthquake impacts residents across the islands

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A powerful magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Hawaiʻi island Friday night — shaking homes across the state, damaging property in South Kona and startling residents from Hilo to Hanalei.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake hit at 9:46 p.m. near Hōnaunau-Nāpōʻopoʻo on the west flank of Mauna Loa at a depth of about 14 miles. Scientists said it was the strongest earthquake in Hawaiʻi since the 6.9 quake in 2018 and one of the strongest recorded in the Hōnaunau area since the 1950s.
