Teachers union wants guarantee for representation at disciplinary meetings

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A push for basic workplace protections took center stage at the Ysleta Independent School District (YISD) board meeting on Wednesday, May 20, as the Ysleta Teachers Association (YTA) demanded formal representation rights for its members during disciplinary meetings.

“We want union representation at any meeting that could lead to disciplinary action. And that’s any meeting,” one union member said during public comment. “When you get that call from your administration that says you got to report to the office and God only knows what someone said or did. But we already know our jobs are on the line.”

The union’s goal is to guarantee that workers have backing at every stage of any investigatory and disciplinary process. Currently, the union argues that when members are called into an office by administration, they are often walking in blind — not knowing why they are being questioned, what they may be accused of, or if they can even request representation before the interview begins.

To address this, the YTA wants the guarantee written directly into district policy…
