335-acre waterfowl sanctuary to be added to Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge

DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — Waterfowl in north Alabama will soon have more than 300 acres of habitat to call their own.

The Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge in Decatur is working on a new, 335-acre sanctuary designed to provide a peaceful and protected space for thousan.ds of geese, ducks, cranes and other birds.

To help reduce human disturbance, Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge will close a one-mile stretch of road from the Buckeye-Thorsen Arm Unit between HGH Road and JTT Road to public entry, bikers and hikers from Nov. 15 to Feb. 28. Hikers will still be able to access the surrounding area, including 20 miles of roads and trails near the impoundment and 70 miles throughout the refuge…
