The dangers of using AI chatbots for therapy

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming more common in day-to-day life, from scrolling social media to ordering fast food to even therapy.

The use of AI has increased over the past three years. According to a study conducted by the PEW Research Center, 62% of young adults in the U.S have interacted with artificial intelligence at least several times a week in 2025. That number is even higher for 13- to 17-year-olds.

Adolescents’ use of AI chatbots

Celeste Compos-Castillo is an associate professor of media and information at Michigan State University. She recently conducted a national survey asking teenagers about their use of AI chatbots.

“I found that about three-quarters of them are using chatbots already. Of those, the most popular kinds of chatbots that they’re using are things like ChatGPT, Copilot, and Gemini, what we call a text-based or a general-purpose chatbot, because you can do pretty much anything and everything with those chatbots,” said Campos-Castillo.
