Police in Yankton are urging people to take precautions and protect their vehicles from thieves over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Police say there’s been an increase in vehicle break-ins and thefts over the past week. They’re urging homeowners and businesses to review security camera video from the past several days to help with their investigation. They’re reminding the public to always lock their vehicles, remove keys and key fobs and to not leave valuables inside unattended vehicles.
Yankton sees increase in car break-ins
The Turner County Sheriff’s Office is urging drivers to slow down after clocking someone going over 100 miles per hour. The Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook that a motorcycle was traveling 106 miles per hour in a 65 mile an hour zone. Officials also say the driver used a turning lane to pass another vehicle. The post reads “That’s the kind of decision that can turn deadly in a split second.”
Speeder in Turner County tops 100 mph
A weekend house fire in central Sioux Falls sent one person to the hospital. Fire crews arrived at this home near Terry Redlin Elementary around 7-30 Saturday morning. You can see some of the smoke coming from the roof. They were able to put out the flames within ten minutes, but one person who made it out of the home was taken to the hospital with injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Sioux Falls Stampede are champions once again. The Herd defeated the Muskegon Lumberjacks in double-overtime last night. The game was tied at 3 until Joey Macrina scored the championship winning goal. The Stampede took the best of five series 3-1. It’s the Stampede’s fourth Clark Cup title in franchise history. Their previous championships were in 2019, 2015, and 2007.

The Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society is celebrating the donation of an original Harvey Dunn painting this weekend. The artwork has been passed down through generations connected to the family, and was gifted back to the society on Saturday. Guests at the celebration in DeSmet also showed off their best hats in a fun contest while also enjoying a special afternoon tea. Three winners were selected from the hat contest, with the grand prize being tickets to a June Dierks Bently concert in Sioux Falls.

A Sioux Falls business is marking the memorial holiday weekend by marking customers for a good cause. Divergent Ink is donating the proceeds from tattoos this weekend to the Disabled American Veterans organization. Shop owner Liz Jacob’s husband spent ten years in the Air Force. She say the DAV helped her husband get the medical care he needed, and this is her way of giving back to the veteran community.
