Villager can ditch GPS and return home after domestic violence arrest

A Villager has been allowed to remove a court-ordered GPS device and return home following a domestic violence arrest.

Steve Weherley, 73, was arrested April 27 on a felony charge of battery following an alleged attack on his wife at their home in the Village of Country Club Hills. He was released from jail two days after his arrest with strict instructions to stay away from his wife and their home on the Historic Side of The Villages.

However, a document filed earlier this month in Lake County Court indicates that Weherley’s estranged wife has moved out of their home. Weherley has been allowed to move back in and remove a GPS device he had been ordered to wear.

Weherley was arrested after his 70-year-old wife went to The Villages Public Safety Department fire station on Paradise Drive on the Historic Side of The Villages where she met with a police officer to report the attack, according to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department. She said they had been arguing when she tried to exit the home and go out onto the carport. However, Weherley, who stands 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 200 pounds, grabbed her right wrist and forced her back into the home. She later tried to leave in the golf cart, but her husband of 10 years grabbed her neck and throat, again preventing her from leaving the residence. She eventually fled to a friend’s home.
