As Xcel Seeks Another Rate Increase, Longmont’s City-Owned Utility Follows a Different Model

As Colorado regulators consider a proposed electric rate increase for Xcel Energy customers, Longmont residents served by the city’s municipal utility are once again seeing how their community’s electric system differs from the state’s largest investor-owned utility.

Xcel Energy and several parties in a pending Colorado rate case have reached a proposed settlement that would increase electric revenue by approximately $225 million. According to reporting by the Colorado Sun, the agreement would raise the average residential electric bill by about $6.13 per month if approved by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission.

The proposal represents a scaled-back version of Xcel’s original request. In its rate case filing, Xcel said its initial proposal would have increased the average residential electric bill by approximately 9.93%, or $9.94 per month…
