Progressive Manny Rutinel projected to win the Democratic primary in CD-8

Progressive Manny Rutinel is the projected winner in the Democratic primary in Colorado’s 8th Congressional District, a GOP-held seat that is one of a handful of toss-up districts in the country.

The state representative running to be his party’s nominee for the general election was significantly outpacing his opponents Wednesday morning with nearly 62% of the vote. Shannon Bird had nearly 35% of the vote and Evan Munsing — who was on the ballot though he had dropped out of the race — had nearly 5% of the vote.

CD-8 is one of the swing districts that will help decide control of the U.S. House this fall. The district includes a large section of the northern part of the Denver metro area and areas of Larimer and Weld County including Greeley.

Incumbent Rep. Gabe Evans ran unopposed in the Republican primary. He is hoping to become the first two-term congressional representative for the district since it was formed four years ago.
