Fort Collins Stunned As Beloved Teacher Killed In Mulberry Construction Crash

Fort Collins is grieving the loss of Catherine “Cate” Withrow, a 53-year-old middle school teacher who was struck and killed Monday by a semi-truck tied to a city repaving project while she walked her bicycle across East Mulberry Street. Colleagues at Boltz Middle School and students are mourning the longtime educator and coach, as the collision reconstruction team continues to piece together what happened.

Withrow taught seventh-grade science, math, and health, and also coached cross country at Boltz Middle School, where she had returned to teach at her alma mater after a career in nursing. According to the staff directory at Boltz Middle School, she was deeply involved in both classroom life and athletics.

Police Say Crash Happened Inside Active Roadwork Zone

Fort Collins 9-1-1 started receiving calls about the collision at around 6:20 p.m. on Monday. Responding officers found a bicyclist who had been struck and was deceased at the scene. The tractor-trailer involved was working on the East Mulberry repaving project, and construction personnel were already on site when Withrow attempted to cross the street.
