Big elk herd spotted near Loveland subdivision

LOVELAND, Colo. (KDVR) — A Loveland couple was in for quite the surprise late Saturday night when they spotted 75-100 elk outside of a daycare center.

“I can’t imagine these people looking out of their house windows and seeing 75-100 elk, just packed into that little cul-de-sac. It was incredible,” Al Roller said.

Roller and his girlfriend, Barbara Green, rolled on cell phone video while remaining safely in their car. In the video, you can hear the howls of coyotes in the distance.

With the proximity of Estes Park, Colorado Parks and Wildlife said it’s not unusual to see elk so close to the human population, especially in the winter.

A CPW spokesperson cautions, though, that visitors should allow plenty of space between themselves and elk. It’s advice Roller already heeds.

“I don’t know, you can’t trust ’em. They look tame, but they’re wild. You should always stay in your vehicle,” he said.
