Estes Park police records may have been destroyed

DENVER (KDVR) — The Estes Park Police Department announced concerns Friday about police records and documents that may have been destroyed.

Last month, town staff reviewed all of the Police Department’s historical internal affairs records, and what they found raised questions about management and retention practices over 14 years, according to a release from Town Administrator Travis Machalek .

Town staff are specifically concerned about inconsistencies in how internal affairs investigations were managed between 2004 and 2018. Machalek said some records may have been destroyed before they met the correct retention date.

“We are concerned that some records may have been destroyed before they met the correct retention date,” Machalek said in the release.

Machalek said once he learned that certain records may have been destroyed early, the town’s Information Technology Division searched electronic files for any trace of those records.
