Twice as nice: Poudre wrestling’s Billy Greenwood, Banks Norby win Colorado state titles

DENVER — It’s all in the family for this Poudre program, through blood or the program clan.

It couldn’t have been clearer on the biggest stage at state.

Impala wrestlers Billy Greenwood and Banks Norby won Class 5A Colorado state wrestling championships in a matter of minutes Saturday night in Ball Arena.

Greenwood started it off with a thrilling upset win over defending state champ Jacob Myers of Ponderosa in the 144-pound final.

After losing to Myers twice last year in decisive fashion — once in a regional final and again in the state semifinals — this was Greenwood’s time.

The duo battled to a physical 1-1 draw through the overtime period, requiring a decisive tiebreaker. Greenwood escaped a hold, but Myers couldn’t do the same for a 2-1 sudden victory final.

“I knew after I got that point that I just had to ride him out,” Greenwood said. “We weren’t going to keep going.”

He was right. And the celebration was on.

Greenwood turned to family immediately, with older brother and Poudre legend/four-time (2015-18) state champion Jacob assisting head coach Barrett Golyer in Billy’s corner for several matches.
